Pilum Moderator

from $226.00

Pilum is a Roman type of javelin or spear, special in that it is unusually long and slender. This moderator takes the proven concepts of the Levitas, but adds about 30% more length and a fair bit more silence. At 35x170mm and 70 grams it is still reasonably small and incredibly light weight. The core is manufactured from an ultra light weight, strong, and solvent resistant 20% high modulus carbon fiber reinforced nylon. (nylon alone is what Glock frames are made out of) It attaches via a 1/2-20UNF thread.

The basic premise of the design though is to use Nikola Tesla’s Gas Diode to reflex air back on itself and stop forward flow in the moderator. The moderator uses a three stage system. First the air is stripped off the pellet, reducing turbulence and improving accuracy. Second it is delayed via compound gas diodes. Finally a damping system muffles the sound. Most moderator designs focus on one of two capabilities, either sound wave damping or flow delaying, and this is copied the entire length of the moderator. Why though should the sound and flow at the back of the moderator be the same as at the front? It didn't make sense to us either, thus the design adapts along its length to maximize efficiency and minimize size and weight, a mere 70 grams. An optional stainless steel thread insert enhances thread durability and adds a scant 3 grams.

Every moderator is made to order, a process which takes two weeks. All designs are considered experimental.

FLOW

It would be absurd to think one moderator design would produce optimized sound attenuation for all levels of air flow. Based on our test platforms, we’re optimizing for two different clearly stated power/flow situations. We recommend you select the moderator which most closely matches your own application in order to maximize effective sound attenuation and ensure safe operation. Additional information to help you select which moderator is right for your application can be found on the Moderator Configuration & Application Optimization page. All our moderator bores are 8.4mm. Larger diameter bores are available upon request. All designs are considered experimental.

Standard - Optimized for shrouded FX Crown .22 producing 32 foot pounds; flow factor 460. Factory configuration w/ extended shroud peak is 288

Moderate - Optimized for shrouded FX Crown .30 producing 80 foot pounds; flow factor 1,111. Factory configuration w/ extended shroud peak is 637.6

Pilum trace (standard flow) as tested on a shrouded FX Crown .22 showing the very low peak and quick taper to background. Average peak was 51.8.

Pilum trace (moderate flow) as tested on a shrouded FX Crown .30 showing the relatively low peak, and more sustained draining of large air quantities. This causes the design to be perceived as louder than it actually is. Average peak was 92.6. (Y axis scale differs from the .22 trace)
