Product Updates: Pellet Caddy Improvements, Universal Optic Mounts, and Discontinuing Altaros Slugs
Silent Thunder Ordnance
Pellet Caddy Design and Manufacturing Improvements
Our pellet caddies feature a six-lug radial design for quick opening and closing, with textured sides for secure grip. Recent manufacturing improvements have enhanced the aesthetic quality, including cleaner surface finishes, sharper engraving, and improved color depth and patterns. Two-tone finishes are now standard, featuring iridescence that's difficult to capture in photographs. Select models incorporate glow-in-the-dark material—a brief exposure to light provides hours of visibility for low-light shooting conditions.
Design Evolution
The pellet caddy was developed to address common issues with standard JSB tins: inadequate closures leading to pellet spillage, lack of internal cushioning, and resulting pellet damage that affects accuracy. The design incorporates an internal baffle structure inspired by milk tanker trucks to eliminate contents shifting during transport.
The initial threaded closure design proved too slow for practical use, particularly with spring-piston airguns requiring access for each shot. The current six-lug radial system, adapted from AR-15 design principles, provides secure closure with minimal rotation. For competitive shooting applications where pellet condition is critical, a foam-pocket variant cradles each pellet individually, preventing any contact damage. Caliber selection is required for this version to ensure proper fit.
Size Options
Three sizes address different use cases. The mini version fits comfortably in smaller pockets while holding sufficient pellets for hunting applications. The standard size offers balanced capacity and portability, suitable for extended target shooting sessions. The mega size maximizes pellet capacity while remaining hand-holdable and fitting in jacket pockets or loose-fitting jeans.
Offset Picatinny Rail Adapter System
Building on the success of our AGM thermal monocular adapters, we've developed a modular picatinny-to-picatinny adapter system. This universal mounting solution uses a slim under-scope clamp and exposes a picatinny rail section for mounting various optics, eliminating the need for optic-specific adapters.
The system offers horizontal offsets of 57mm and 75mm with a 20mm vertical offset. This vertical dimension assumes the primary optic occupies the largest profile, allowing the offset optic to mount lower. Additional riser blocks can be added if greater height is needed.
Altaros Turned Slugs: A Difficult Business Decision
Altaros slugs represent a significant advancement in airgun ammunition manufacturing. Precision lathe-turned projectiles have historically been considered the gold standard for ammunition quality, but the challenges of machining soft lead prevented their application to airgun ammunition, limiting airgunners to swaged or cast options.
Altaros developed proprietary CNC turning technology capable of machining soft lead with precise dimensions, perfect axial symmetry, and consistent mass. Freedom from swaging constraints allows for rifling band designs that reduce friction and improve chambering consistency. The slugs achieve ballistic coefficients as high as 0.25 in .25 caliber and 0.21 in .22 caliber, representing exceptional aerodynamic efficiency.
When we first began carrying Altaros slugs, we were the only US retailer stocking them. We were genuinely excited about the product—these represent a true technological breakthrough and exemplify the kind of cutting-edge work we admire. As a small brand ourselves, we identify with Altaros's approach to innovation.
However, we've made the difficult decision to discontinue this product line. Several factors contributed to this choice: ongoing import challenges, unpredictable tariff situations, and the market reality that ammunition-specific retailers are better positioned to serve this niche. With other retailers now carrying Altaros products, it makes strategic sense for us to refocus our efforts on our core product development.
