Spyderco Mule Team

from $13.00

Spyderco's Mule Team puts cutting-edge blade steels within reach, but completing the knife usually means hunting down aftermarket handles and a sheath separately. We built this system to change that. Handles, sheath, and modular carry clips designed together.

The handles take Spyderco's ergonomic obsession seriously. Deep three-dimensional compound curves fill the palm naturally, optimizing thumb placement for pinch grip and providing positive retention in saber grip under load. The sheath engages the blade's rear hump, not the handles, so retention is rock-solid regardless of carry orientation. Together they turn a bare Mule blank into a complete, field-ready fixed blade.

Key Features:

  • Complete carry system: Handles, high-retention sheath, modular J-clip, and MOLLE clip included, everything needed to field a finished Mule Team knife

  • Spyderco-inspired ergonomics: Three-dimensional compound curves designed to fill the hand's natural shape, with optimized pinch grip geometry and pinkie clearance for high-force cutting tasks

  • Orientation-independent retention: Sheath retention engages blade geometry, not handle profile, knife stays seated inverted, horizontal, or under hard use

  • 360-degree carry flexibility: J-clip and MOLLE clip (included with sheath) both mount at any angle, horizontal, 45-degree cant, vertical, or inverted, for OWB, IWB, or pack carry

  • User-serviceable retention: Retention springs are field-replaceable; alternate tension options available

  • Recessed hardware: Chicago-screw mounting points are countersunk to eliminate pressure points during extended carry

  • Lume-ready lanyard hole: Accepts 6.3x11.5mm Lume Insert for low-light retrieval

  • Material options: Advanced materials including PPS and ultra-light-weight composites available for enhanced performance

Ergonomics Handle geometry features generous three-dimensional compound curves designed to match the hand's natural resting shape. Viewed from above, the handles are deeply contoured to fill the palm, with distinct thumb and index finger placement zones for pinch grip and deliberate pinkie clearance to prevent fatigue under load. Screw holes are recessed to eliminate hot spots during extended use. All Mule Team handle sets share the same side profile (dictated by the tang), but the contour depth is where our design’s ergonomic work happens.

Sheath Retention Retention engages the blade's rear hump via an internal spring mechanism. This approach is independent of handle geometry, meaning the sheath functions correctly with any handle configuration as long as the ricasso clears the sheath body. Internal geometry uses double distal tapering to match the blade profile, keeping the sharp edge suspended away from sheath walls to protect both edge and sheath material. Retention springs are user-replaceable; contact us if you require alternate spring tensions.

Mounting and Carry Both J-clip and MOLLE clip use standard 25mm on-center hole spacing, making them interchangeable with each other and compatible with most commercial mounting platforms. The J-clip accommodates belts and straps up to 45mm tall and 7mm thick, slips over a belt without removal, and holds position under draw force. The MOLLE clip threads through standard 1-inch MOLLE/PALS webbing in horizontal or vertical orientation. Both clips are carbon fiber reinforced polyamide. Two rubber spacers are included with each clip for standoff adjustment. The sheath body features 5mm mounting holes and can be drilled for custom configurations.

Compatibility Compatible with all Mule Team models except HIC (High Impact Ceramic). Likely functional on SPY-27 straight-spine variants but untested. Because retention is blade-geometry dependent, handle configuration does not affect sheath compatibility.

Hardware Handle fasteners are 18-8 stainless steel, Phillips drive. Sheath fasteners are QPQ-blackened stainless steel, T-20 Torx drive. Lanyard hole accepts 6.3x11.5mm Lume Inserts.

Materials

  • Sheath bodies are ABS/ASA for rugged impact resistance, and protection of the blade’s edge in the event of incidental contact.

  • Clips and retention spring are polyamide for flexibility, wear resistance, and fatigue life.

  • Handle options:

    • ASA-CF offers weather resistance and rugged toughness with the pleasing grippy texture of carbon fiber reinforcement.

    • Ultalight scales are primarily made up of a rigid foam that offer a pleasing texture and at just 10 grams (1/4 the weight of our dressy composite scales) they are feather light. Here at STO we’re freaks for anything ultralight, after all it is easy to make something strong, hard to make it strong and light. If you want your mule team to balance over your index finger, these are the scales for you.

    • Ultralight rubberized scales are primarily made up of a rubber foam, rather like horse stall matting in firmness, and with a rigid blue backer. They’re a mere 16 grams.

    • Epoxy-glass composite scales are our dressy option. They’re a glass fiber epoxy composite, infused with a variety of dopants and pigments. This allows a wide range of colors, patterns, and finishes, including glowing variants, than we could otherwise achieve.

    • PPS was selected to be our highest performance handle. It is noted for its exceptional thermal and chemical performance; it maintains structural integrity at continuous service temperatures up to 220°C (428°F), has a melting point of 280°C (540°F), and has no known solvents below 200°C (392°F), remaining chemically inert to strong acids, bases, organic solvents, oxidizing agents, and halogens. Epoxy-based laminates like G10 begin degrading above 140°C (284°F) and are inherently vulnerable to moisture absorption and chemical attack. Our PPS handles are available reinforced with glass fiber (lighter gray, subtle iridescence) or carbon fiber (near-black, more pronounced iridescence), both providing an exceptionally grippy, no-slip texture. If you wanted a “till the end of the earth” handle material, this would be it.

Glowing variants are powered using strontium aluminate, the brightest and longest lasting glow technology. Charging is best done with a bright light source. Learn more about our glow tech.
